You just received notice that you need to make a trip abroad and you only have two or three days to prepare. What do you do? How to you prepare so quickly? Is it possible to get a last minute passport? This article will reveal the steps necessary to obtain your travel document in only 24 to 48 hours.

Passport processing centers offer expedited service to American citizens because they understand that the unexpected happens, emergency arise without warning. The application process for a last minute passport is exactly the same as routine service except for the fact that either you or someone you authorize must appear at a regional agency in order to submit the application and supporting documents.

If you live in or near a city where a regional agency is located, you can submit the form yourself. If not, there are several expediting services that are registered with the State Department that can do this for you.

Applying for a new passport requires you submit form DS-11 along with the following documents: valid ID, a copy of the identification document, evidence of U.S. citizenship, a recent passport photo. Once the expediting service receives your sealed packet and authorization letter, they will deliver it to the processing center. Then, they will pick the new passport up when it is issued and mail it to you. In some cases, the passport can be hand-delivered at an airport.

Note, the application and supporting documents can only be sent to the expediter once the form has been adjudicated by an authorized agent. You have this done at a local passport office. With more than 9,400 application acceptance facilities in the United States, you are likely to find one near you. Visit the facility. Sign the application in the presence of the agent. Then, take the sealed packet and mail it to the expediting service.

Remember to include payment for the application fee in sealed envelope. Place this in a larger envelope with the authorization letter and payment to the expediter. By using express mail service, you should be able to obtain a passport in 24 to 48 hours, not including weekends or holidays.
